Seeking joy in the mundane

Joy sometimes feels like this elusive emotion that comes and goes and never stays. With the holidays coming up, some people let the stress of it take over. There times where people are grumpy and take it out on all the retail workers they encounter.

But isn’t the holiday supposed to be about Jesus and how much we love him and are grateful he was born? Why do we often lose sight of this? Why when we feel stuck or attacked do we often times blame the one who has come to comfort us?

In a podcast or a sermon where Bill Johnson was talking, he said he wrote down every single one of the prophetic words spoken over him. He carried them in a binder. If you haven’t heard of prophetic words they are just words spoken over you from other people who were lead by the Holy Spirit. Anyway, Johnson would read those words every single day, to remind himself of what God said about him.

Obviously, we can do this with the promises God has given us in the Bible. A few are: he will never leave us or forsake us, he has given us a spirit of power, love and self discipline. With that we can take joy that God will take care of us. You do not have to be afraid of what is going to happen or what your finances are like.

When I say these things it doesn’t mean you should stop looking for a job or that everything will just fall in your lap. It means if you are working toward a solution, God will provide one.

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up, it’s the perfect time to be grateful. Rejoicing and being grateful will always uplift your spirit and bring you joy. My mom always told me to sing when I was sad. You can sing in worship and praise or just to the radio or whatever your heart desires.

God has given us so much to be grateful for. Where there is gratitude, joy will surely follow.
